Superstition Mountains

16 x 20 inch acrylic painting of Superstition Mountains on black canvas
Superstition Mountains

Superstition Mountains began as an exploration of acrylic painting on black canvas. The dark surface allowed light and color to emerge gradually, creating an atmosphere that reflected both the drama and beauty of Arizona’s desert landscape.

The painting depicts the iconic profile of the Superstition Mountains, including Anvil Peak, a landmark familiar to hikers and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the region. As the work progressed, it became less about the landscape itself and more about the personal connections associated with it.

Shortly after completion, the painting was given as a wedding gift to my son and his bride. Having recently relocated from Arizona to Utah, they immediately recognized the mountain they had often hiked and explored together. The painting became a reminder of a place they loved and a chapter of life they carried with them.

Today the artwork hangs in their home. For me, it serves as a reminder that paintings often continue their journey after they leave the studio, connecting people with places, memories, and experiences that remain important long after circumstances change.
