Paris, France After Dark

Paris, France after Dark

Paris has entered my life in different seasons and for different reasons. I first visited during the late 1970s and early 1980s, and I have returned several times since—most recently in connection with continuing collaborative work with French firefighters and professionals exploring High Reliability Organizing.

Each visit has revealed a different city. After dark, Paris shifts from monument to atmosphere. Light pools on pavement. Architecture recedes into tone and shadow. The city becomes less declarative and more reflective.

This painting focuses on that transition. It is not a catalog of landmarks, but an exploration of how light defines space once the day has concluded. Movement is implied rather than described. Figures and structures become secondary to mood.

Paris, for me, holds both personal memory and professional exchange—conversations, shared learning, and time spent walking streets slowly enough to notice their character. After dark, the city feels contemplative. That quality is what this work seeks to hold.
