Threshold of Seasons
On rare winter mornings in southern Arizona, the familiar Sonoran Desert quietly transforms. Snow settles across the nearby Catalina Mountains, softening rugged ridges while the saguaros below continue their timeless watch, creating a scene that feels both unexpected and fleeting.
This painting was inspired by one of those remarkable mornings following a snowfall near Honey Bee Canyon in Oro Valley. During a walk through the desert, I was struck by the extraordinary contrast between the resilience of the desert landscape and the temporary gift of winter resting upon it.
Like many of my paintings, this work explores a threshold—a brief moment when two worlds seem to meet. It reminds us that even places we believe we know well can surprise us, revealing beauty that appears only for those willing to pause and look.
